14 year old high school freshman Shaquanda Cotton of Paris, Texas was sentenced to up to 7 years in the Texas Youth Commission (TYC) for allegedly pushing a teachers aide during a confrontation at her school. Cotton has already served over a year in a facility with violent offenders she does not belong with. To make her situation even more devastating, the TYC has been recently reorganized by the Texas Governor, Rick Perry. Several high ranking officials were terminated because the facility was staffed by convicted sex offenders! What child, guilty or not, deserves that punishment! We have a system that's seriously BROKEN. The fox is guarding the hen house and the hen house is run by wolves! The Texas Department of Corrections (TDC) is a business and the inmates are nothing more than free labor. Most prisoners typically serve their maximum sentence so that the checks keep coming for thier care. Each prisoner basically respresents a dollar figure. So just like any other business seeks to retain customers, TCD seeks to retain inmates, regardless of guilt.
Flash back to 1959 when the last public lynching took place in, you guessed: Paris, Texas http://blackhistorypages.com/. The whole town gathered to watch as a black man was "hung high." The TDC is simply a modern day answer to stringing black people from trees. Why? Because like lynching, the punishment rarely fits the crime and the punisher has something to gain in the act. The angry lynch mob was allowed to act out revenge and terrorize other blacks in the community with every violent murder. The TDC benefits by pure profit. Notice that justice and humanity take a back seat.
So the modern day lynchings that take place under our so-called justice system needs to be questioned. Shaquanda is not a criminal and should be released immediately. The year that she has already spent in prison guarded by pedophiles is hardly a suitable punishment for any child. http://freeshaquandacotton.blogspot.com/
